Grace, forty, is a scientist at the Exousia Foundation. When her boss Giovanni tells her that her colleague Xiu Chen has died — his camp looted and burned, his computer gone — Grace leaves for Costa Rica to recover the records of his research on plants able to tolerate high levels of CO2.
On the island where Xiu was running his secret experiments, guided by his young assistant Santiago, Grace finds a plant with very long leaves that had already appeared to her daughter in a dream. Back in the city a car comes after them: Grace flees to Italy with a few specimens.
At home the research becomes the object of enormous interests. Between an old friend who teaches Biology, the executive of a multinational demanding the results, and a software engineer who hides the data in a secure cloud, Grace uncovers the true meaning of Xiu’s work: to communicate with certain plant species, to understand their language, to save the planet. And she decides to protect that research so that it remains the heritage of humankind.
