January 1943, Russian Front. Company 604 is forced to cross the steppe to escape the enemy encirclement. When night comes, however, of the whole 604 only six Alpini plus a mule remain, advancing in silence, under an incessant snow, while the temperature touches 40 below zero.
The exasperating journey, made in that white desert, pushes men to lose the perception of time and, step by step, leads them to take refuge in a dreamlike dimension where there is a “second path” made up of dreams, nightmares and memories. A long night of war and a human journey, between balke, woods, mountain lakes, burning villages, snowy beaches and wheat fields.
