After the Baroque, Futurism was the most important and innovative cultural movement born in Italy and spread across the world. The father of every avant-garde that followed, from Dada to Cage, it changed the relationship between art and life for good, anticipating in countless fields — scientific, social and technological: the computer, television, the relationship between men and women, architecture — intuitions that would only come true decades later.
The documentary alternates archive footage, newly staged scenes, interviews with historians of the subject and the interventions of its author and director. Since what has to be told and explained is Futurism itself, the film takes a futuristic approach: in the editing as much as in the acting, in the costumes and even in the special effects.
On screen the protagonists of the movement take shape: Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, poet, publisher, provocateur and engine of culture in every field; Umberto Boccioni, the genius of Futurist painting and sculpture, dead very young; Carlo Carrà and Luigi Russolo, with him the authors of the Manifesto of Futurist Painting, the latter the inventor of the intonarumori; Gino Severini, who in Paris moved among Picasso, Braque and Apollinaire; Giacomo Balla, who in 1913 auctioned off his own «passéist» works and began signing himself Futurballa; and Adriana Bisi Fabbri, painter and caricaturist, cut down by the Spanish flu.
